On the Origin of Density Cusps in Elliptical Galaxies

چکیده

We investigated the dynamical reaction of the central region of galaxies to a falling massive black hole by N -body simulations. As the initial galaxy model, we used an isothermal King model and placed a massive black hole at around the half-mass radius of the galaxy. We found that the central core of the galaxy is destroyed by the heating due to the black hole and that a very weak density cusp (ρ ∝ r−α, with α ∼ 0.5) is formed around the black hole. This result is consistent with recent observations of large elliptical galaxies with Hubble Space Telescope. The velocity of the stars becomes tangentially anisotropic in the inner region, while in the outer region the stars have radially anisotropic velocity dispersion. The radius of the weak cusp region is larger for larger black hole mass. Our result naturally explains the formation of the weak cusp found in the previous simulations of galaxy merging, and implies that the weak cusp observed in large elliptical galaxies may be formed by the heating process by sinking black holes during merging events. On the Cusp around Central Black Holes in Luminous Elliptical Galaxies.

In this Letter, we show that a massive black hole (MBH) that falls into the center of a galaxy on the dynamical timescale leaves a weak cusp (rho~r-1&solm0;2) around it, which is in good agreement with the recent observations of luminous elliptical galaxies by the Hubble Space Telescope. Such an event is a natural outcome of the merging of two galaxies that have central MBHs. This is the only k...

Cusps without chaos

We present cuspy, non–axisymmetric, scale–free mass models of discs, whose gravitational potentials are of Stäckel form in parabolic coordinates. A black hole may be added at the centre, without in any way affecting the Stäckel form; the dynamics in these potentials is, of course, fully integrable. The surface density, Σdisc ∝ 1/r γ , where 0 < γ < 1 corresponds to steep cusps for which the cen...

Formation of Galactic Nuclei

We investigate a model in which galactic nuclei form via the coalescence of pre-existing stellar systems containing supermassive black holes. Merger simulations are carried out using N -body algorithms that can follow the formation and decay of a black-hole binary and its effect on the surrounding stars down to sub-parsec scales. Our initial stellar systems have steep central density cusps simi...

The Fundamental Plane and merger scenario I. Star formation history of galaxy mergers and origin of the Fundamental Plane

We perform numerical simulations of galaxy mergers between star-forming and gas-rich spirals in order to explore the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies. We consider particularly that the origin of the slope of the FP is essentially due to the non-homology in structure and kinematics of elliptical galaxies and accordingly investigate structural and kinematical properties...

On the Orgin of Stars in Bulges and Elliptical Galaxies -I. Implication for surface mass density & size distribution

We investigate the stellar composition of bulges and elliptical galaxies as predicted by the CDM paradigm using semi-analytical modelling. We argue that spheroid stars are built up of two main components, merger and quiescent, according to the origin of the stars. The merger component is formed during major mergers by gas driven to the centre, while the quiescent component is formed in gaseous ...
